Major Spectator Event – The 2014 Canadian Historic Grand Prix

Racers from across Canada and the United States will descend on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park just north of Bowmanville, Ontario with their MGs, Triumphs, Jaguars, Porsches, Alfa Romeos, Lotus, Minis and more to challenge the world famous Mosport Grand Prix Circuit.

The Canadian Historic Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious events on the Vintage and Historic Racing Calendar in North America and it is the largest and most popular event of its kind in Canada and counted as a “Major Spectator Event” at Mosport since 1999.

The Event will take place at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park June 13 – 15, 2014.

Triumph and MG Racers will be the “Featured Marques” for 2014 as VARAC steps back in time to in time to recreate the epic battle for sportscar supremacy between British manufacturers – Standard Triumph and MG Cars. Mosport’s tarmac has seen that battle play out decade after decade and now, VARAC is staging what promises to be the largest ever such contest in its 2014 Triumph vs MG CanAm Challenge.

If you want to find more about MG heritage in Canada? Watch this fantastic VARAC video by KarmaComa Studio which is a great teaser for the 2014 Canadian Historic Grand Prix.

This year, racing fans will once again be thrilled to witness a huge grid of swarming, fast Triumphs and MGs piloted by cunning and experienced drivers from across Canada and the US, returning back to claim victory as they challenge the Mosport tarmac and each other once again.

In addition to the featured Triumphs and MGs, there will be three full days of exciting racing involving full grids for all Vintage and Historic racing machines from Minis to Mustangs and Canada Class open wheelers to CanAm cars.

There will be racing for six groups of cars including Monoposto (single seat openwheel vintage & historic race cars), Small Bore Vintage & Historic Cars (under 2000cc), Big Bore Vintage & Historic Cars (over 2000cc), Wings & Slicks (very fast purposebuilt racing cars running on slick tires), G70+ Cars (cars dating from 1973 to 1989 including all kinds of Alfas, Corvettes, Porsches, Mustangs and a host of others.

Also this year, working together with the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the BIA has moved to re-establish Bowmanville as the Hometown of Motorsport in Canada with the “Canadian Historic Grand Prix Tribute”.

Bob DeShane, event organizer for the VARAC – Canadian Historic Grand Prix said “I had the idea to create an off-track event that would emulate the fabulous street party that happens annually at Watkins Glen during the United States Historic Grand Prix.”

“When I approached the folks at the Bowmanville BIA, the response was an immediate YES!  The BIA has been wonderful to work with and it is going to be a fabulous event that everyone can get involved in.  We really encourage owners of Hot Rods, Street Rods, Cruisers, Sports Cars and Motorcycles to come out and join in the car and bike shows in the downtown area.”

This week the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) named one of North America’s greatest sports car racers and creator of “Group 44 Inc.’’, Bob Tullius as the Grand Marshal for its annual Canadian Historic Grand Prix.

Tullius created one of the longest lasting and most successful racing stables in North America, spanning over twenty-five years.  During that time, Group 44 represented British Car Manufacturers and iconic brands such as Triumph, MG and Jaguar.  Tullius and company raced everything from a Triumph TR3 in which he won his first-ever race in 1961 to Jaguar XKEs to his own prototype Jaguar XJR-7.  He is counted as royalty amongst Triumph owners, drivers and racers because of his huge success racing Triumph Cars.

30th VARAC Vintage Festival - Mosport 2009

This full tube framed racecar won three Trans-Am races in 1981, including Portland, Brainerd and at Mosport with Bob Tullius at the wheel. With Canadian Bill Adam and Gordon Smiley co-driving with Tullius the XJR-4 ran the 1982 24 hours of Daytona, becoming the first V12 powered Jaguar to complete a 24 hour endurance race. In 2005 Andrew Moore bought XJR-4 and it has been raced by both Andy and his son Steve in numerous historic races, including winning the VARAC Trans-Am Reunion Race.
