F1 confirms HD television feed for 2011

Formula One Management (FOM) on Wednesday has as expected confirmed reports that a high definition (HD) feed will be available to all of the sport’s host television broadcasters in 2011.

The announcement comes after Sky Deutschland said its German-speaking subscribers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be able to watch the sport in true “native” HD this season.

FOM on Wednesday duly confirmed that all F1 track sessions including support events “will be originated in HD … throughout the world at a data rate of 42 Megabits/second (MPEG-2)”.

And after Sky’s announcement on Tuesday, Formula One Management added that it believes “many other channels” will “follow suit before the season gets underway”.

“The news follows extensive research, development and investment by FOM to ensure the best possible HD offering for its global TV audience”, added a report at F1’s official website.
