The Pirelli tyres were tried out for the first time today at the tests in the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It was just after 9 o´clock in the morning when Pastor Maldonado drove the Hispania Racing car out of the box with the new Pirelli tyres on for the first time. The Italian tyre supplier company returns to Formula 1 after a 19-year absence. Hispania Racing used the day to become familiar with the new medium and soft compound slicks. Pastor Maldonado did many short runs so the Spanish team could try out different adjustments on the car and see how the new tyres responded, in order to get ready for the 2011 season. The Venezuelan drove a total of 83 laps (460.982 km), clocking a best time of 1.45.728. Tomorrow he will be back in the car with Hispania Racing to complete the second and final day of the Pirelli test in Abu Dhabi. Hispania Racing wants to welcome Pirelli back into Formula 1.

Dr. Colin Kolles, Team Principal:

“With an air temperature of around 30 degrees and a track of 44, today’s conditions were ideal for testing the new Pirelli tyres for the first time. We have worked very hard and we were one of the teams who did a big number of laps. The target of the testing program today was to get as much data about the new tyres as possible, and we fulfilled it completely.  Firstly, Pastor Maldonado had to get used to the new tyres, which are also new to us. After his settling in period, he felt more comfortable and could give us more information about the new tyres so that we could learn about them and keep on improving.”

Pastor Maldonado:

“I enjoyed being back in the HRT F110 and get more experience in a Formula 1 car. We fulfilled our complete testing program in order to get as much data as possible from the new Pirelli tyres. I have now driven with both tyre suppliers, Bridgestone and Pirelli, and what I learnt out of it was that they are very different in their characteristics. Now we are going to analyze today’s data and get ready to keep on learning about the tyres at the last day of testing tomorrow.”

Saturday, 20th November 2010

After a week of tests at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, today was the second and last day of the Pirelli tests and the end of the 2010 season. Pastor Maldonado was driving for the Hispania Racing team again and completed a total of 65 laps (361.010 km) after doing many short runs to continue helping the Spanish team understand and get used to the new Pirelli tyres. With these useful days in Abu Dhabi, Hispania Racing’s first ever season in Formula 1 comes to an end.

Dr. Colin Kolles, Team Principal:

“After gaining a lot of data about the new Pirell tyres, we used last night to analyze all of it and define our testing program for today. We tried to get more data at the last day of testing and we have been able to learn more about the tyres and how to use them. During this week we have given three talented young drivers the opportunity to get experience in a Formula 1 car. It was good to work with them and we hope to see them in Formula 1 soon. Our aim during this testing week was to do as many laps as possible and to have as much information about the new Pirelli tyres and the car behavior into the winter break to be able to keep on working with and be well prepared for the next tests before the new season begins.”

Pastor Maldonado:

“I am very happy to have been able to do the two days of the Pirelli test with Hispania Racing. Today we tried different settings on the car to find the right set-up with the new tyres. Our focus was not on doing the best lap time but on getting a lot of data which will be important for the development of the car for next year. I really enjoyed being in a Formula 1 car and getting more experience. I am already looking forward to the next season when I hopefully can make use of it in Formula 1.”

No of Laps 81 laps

Best Lap Time 1:41.788

Kilometres Covered 450 kms

Track Length 5.554 kms

Weather Hot and sunny

Preparations for the 2011 season with new Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli got underway at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi today with Nico Rosberg as the first of the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS drivers to evaluate the new tyres.

Nico’s programme for today was to complete an initial performance evaluation to various set-up parameters with the two tyre compounds provided by Pirelli, the medium and soft, which was successfully completed over 81 laps.

Michael Schumacher will drive tomorrow for the second and final day of the test.

Nico Rosberg: “As a team, and particularly the engineers, we did a really good job to be well prepared for this week’s Pirelli test with the work back at the factory and the support here at the track proving invaluable. That really helps once you get the tyres on and we were able to focus precisely on the set-up direction and have found various improvements. It’s a good start however there is obviously still some way to go before we get the best out of the tyres.”

Ross Brawn: “Today has been very important for the team to start building our relationship with Pirelli. Whilst a lot of details remain to be understood, we feel that we have gained an initial understanding of the operational requirements of the two compounds that we have and have highlighted some important areas for investigation and improvement.

We have been lucky to have been able to get exposure to the Pirelli tyres at a track with which we are now very familiar and in conditions that we will not experience again until the final test of the season in Bahrain. Michael watched today’s proceedings with great interest and is looking forward to experiencing the tyres for himself tomorrow.”

Michael Schumacher was in action for the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team today for the second and final day of the Pirelli tyre test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Michael continued the programme begun by team-mate Nico Rosberg yesterday and revisited many of the set-up evaluations to further improve the team’s understanding of the new tyres. Michael covered 74 laps and finished the day in second place on the timesheets.

Michael Schumacher: “Today was my first day of testing for 2011 and I feel that we had an interesting session. We gathered a lot of data and insights, and have positive feedback from our first impression of the new tyres. I am probably the only driver to have driven with Pirelli tyres before but it was 20 years ago and I didn’t have any certain expectations before today. In terms of consistency, it looked quite good but we were using the 2010 car today and it will be all about how these tyres suit our 2011 car. I am already curious to try it out but at the same time I am looking forward to having a break now. I am sure the guys are too and they clearly deserve it. I would like to thank all of them for the good job they have done over the season and I have massively enjoyed working with them.”

Ross Brawn: “Michael and Nico have now completed their first days in the car on Pirelli tyres and both have been impressed. This week’s test has been very productive for us and comes at a time when we can use the information gathered here to fine-tune the detail of our 2011 car and optimise the areas which we believe will be critical. Pirelli have done

an excellent job to get these tyres to where they are now after such a short period of time and we are looking forward to working closely with them through the winter test programme at the start of next year.”

Tyre Test in Abu Dhabi – Day 1

Today, for the first time in 19 years, Formula One cars were running on Pirelli tyres again. In warm ambient temperatures and perfect track conditions, Kamui Kobayashi covered 83 laps on the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and commented positively on next year’s F1 tyre supplier.

Circuit: Yas Marina Circuit / 5.554 km

Driver: Kamui Kobayashi (Japan)

Weather: Sunny and dry, air 22-29°C, track 23-45°C

Chassis / engine: C29.03 / Ferrari 056

Mileage today: 33 laps in the morning, 50 laps in the afternoon

Fastest lap

1:41.466 min in the morning

1:40.950 min in the afternoon

Kamui Kobayashi:

“I think the tyres from Pirelli are well made. We tested how to work with these new tyres and how we need to further develop our car for them, learning in which way they are different to what we were used to running. The tyres were quite consistent. Only in the morning I struggled with tyre wear, but after we made some set-up changes this wasn’t an issue any longer. It was a very interesting test for us.”

James Key (Technical Director):

“It was a very productive day. The baseline set-up was not too far away to begin with. We made a few changes and found a reasonable balance for the car fairly early. We ran our programme as planned with shorter runs to conserve tyres and consistency and a longer run in the end. We feel we learned a lot about the way the Pirelli tyres are behaving and responding to different set-up changes. We have to hand it to Pirelli, the tyres are already on a good level and we feel it was a very positive day.”

What comes next:

Saturday is the second day of tyre testing and the final day of F1 testing until 1st February 2011. Kamui will be driving tomorrow morning, Sergio Pérez will take over driving duties after the lunch break.

Final day of testing in Abu Dhabi

The final day of running for 2010 was mainly dedicated to test items and also to work with the new tyres supplied by Pirelli. Both the team’s 2011 race drivers were at the wheel of the C29 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. Kamui Kobayashi was on duty in the morning, Sergio Pérez took over for the afternoon.

Circuit: Yas Marina Circuit / 5.554 km

Drivers:

Kamui Kobayashi (Japan) in the morning

Sergio Pérez (Mexico) in the afternoon

Weather: Sunny and dry, air 23-28°C, track 28-43°C

Chassis / engine: C29.03 / Ferrari 056

Mileage today: 43 laps in the morning, 46 laps in the afternoon

Fastest laps:

1:42.110 min in the morning

1:42.777 min in the afternoon

Kamui Kobayashi:

“Overall it was good to have this test with the new Pirelli tyres. Despite some technical problems with the car this morning I still gained a little bit more experience with these tyres and we got more data for next year. It was my last run with this car, so I want to say thank you C29! I also want to thank the team, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them.”

Sergio Pérez:

“It was a pretty good day for me even though we had a few problems, but we still got work done and have got a lot of data to be analysed now. It was important for me to do longer runs. I also felt a bit more comfortable with the car and more familiar with the procedures and the engineers, which enabled me to give better feedback to them. I’m quite happy and looking forward to pre-season testing.”

James Key (Technical Director):

“It was another useful day with the new tyres but both drivers suffered from technical failures which compromised our programme. We will look into these issues when we are back in the factory. We learned a little bit more about how the tyres are behaving and it was important for Sergio to get his first run on Pirelli tyres. We had only two sets for him. The main part of his programme was to run on race fuel levels to get a feeling for the car in race condition. Thank you to the team for all the hard work this year! We are looking forward to returning with the new car.”

We completed more aero testing this morning and have collated some useful data. We then started our evaluations of the Pirelli tyres. We tested both the medium and soft compounds and have learnt a lot about their different characteristics. They performed well so, overall, we’ve had a very positive first day with Pirelli.

Rubens Barrichello

We’ve had a busy schedule today with plenty of work to do. This morning we evaluated aero set-up, before going for performance runs in the afternoon. This was our first session with the Pirelli tyres and I found it quite interesting. My initial impressions are positive and I look forward to working with them again tomorrow.

AT&T Williams will be back on track tomorrow, Saturday 20 November, with Rubens Barrichello completing the Pirelli tyre test.

Driver: Rubens Barrichello

Chassis / engine: FW32-01 / CA224

Location: Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. 5.554km / 3.451 miles

Objectives: Brake testing, set-up work and tyre evaluations

Weather: Warm and clear all day

Air & track temps: 27ºC / 33ºC

Tom McCullough, Senior Test Engineer

We evaluated different braking systems today from which we have some interesting results. The rest of the session was spent concentrating on performance set-up work and understanding the new tyres. In summary, the team has had a productive week in Abu Dhabi. We’re pleased with the progress made with Pirelli, and we’ve collected plenty of valuable information to work on before returning to the track with the new car next year.

Rubens Barrichello

Another full day of testing today. We did a lot of laps! We learnt everything about the tyre we needed to and have a good amount of data check out over the winter. I want to thank all of the team for the effort they have put in over the year. They have been great to work with. I am now looking forward to going home and recharging over the next two months and coming back refreshed in 2011.

The AT&T Williams team have now completed this week’s Abu Dhabi young driver and Pirelli test. The team will next be on track in February for the first of four winter test sessions in preparation for the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Renault F1

Abu Dhabi Test, Day 3

The Renault F1 Team began working with Pirelli tyres for the first time today as Robert Kubica got back behind the wheel of the R30 in Abu Dhabi.

Circuit: Abu Dhabi

Length: 5.5 km

Driver: Robert Kubica

Classification: P5

Chassis: R30-03

Total Laps: 39 laps

Fastest Lap: 1:41.032

Robert Kubica: “It’s always interesting to test new tyres and today was our first chance to try the new Pirellis and work with the new tyre engineers. We all know how important the tyres are for the behaviour of the car and so we concentrated on evaluating both compounds and understanding as much as we could about the tyre characteristics. Although we didn’t do a massive number of laps, we have still learned a few things and it feels good to have begun our relationship with Pirelli. Because we stopped early, we have saved some of the tyres for tomorrow, so it will be a busy day as we continue learning.”

Technical Debrief with Alan Permane, Chief Engineer

“We had our first taste of Pirelli tyres today and were able to run both the medium and soft compounds. The morning went well and Robert was reasonably happy with the car balance, although we made a few changes during the day to improve it. Our initial impression of the tyres has been positive: they were working well with good grip and no warm-up issues. Unfortunately we had to stop early because we had a mechanical issue with the car and we preferred to save the tyres for tomorrow when we’ve rectified the problem.”

Abu Dhabi Test Schedule

Saturday 20 November Robert Kubica

Abu Dhabi Test, Day 4

The Renault F1 Team completed a final day of testing in Abu Dhabi as Robert Kubica remained behind the wheel of the R30 to continue evaluating the new Pirelli tyres.

Circuit: Abu Dhabi

Length: 5.5 km

Driver: Robert Kubica

Classification: P5

Chassis: R30-03

Total Laps: 90 laps

Fastest Lap: 1:41.614

Robert Kubica: “It has been quite a productive day and it’s good to complete so many laps on the new tyres. Like yesterday we ran with both compounds and collected a lot of data, which will be useful for us and for Pirelli as well. Overall it has been a positive couple of days and now we have to try and extract as many conclusions as we can from the data. My initial feeling is good and it seemed that the tyres got better as the track conditions improved throughout the day.”

Technical Debrief with Alan Permane, Chief Engineer

“We’ve had a second useful day on the Pirelli tyres and managed to complete medium length runs on both the soft and medium compounds without any significant issues. This allowed us to start understanding the tyre characteristics and assess the degradation rates. We struggled with some understeer today, which we never totally got rid of, so we still need to try and understand that. Over the next couple months we will continue building our relationship with Pirelli by exchanging data so that we’re ready for winter testing to resume next February.”

Lotus Racing

ABU DHABI TYRE TEST – PIRELLI RETURNS TO F1™

Abu Dhabi, U.A.E – 19th November 2010

Pirelli made its official return to Formula One™ today as the last two days of track action of the 2010 season began at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. Lotus Racing’s Heikki Kovalainen was in chassis T127-02 for the first day of the official two day tyre test and rolled out of the garage early on Friday morning on the first ever set of Pirelli tyres mounted in the modern F1™ era. Over a busy day on track he completed 88 laps with a best time of 1.44.686.

Heikki Kovalainen: “It’s good to welcome Pirelli back into our sport and we had a good day on track, completing the whole programme and the balance of the car felt very comfortable all day. Honestly, I would like to drive the car again tomorrow but now we have a long break until testing starts again in a couple of months and I can’t wait to get back in the car next year.”

Mike Gasocyne, Lotus Racing Chief Technical Officer: “An interesting and very useful first day of testing with Pirelli. We had no mechanical issues on the car and managed to complete our full programme in 88 laps. The car was ballasted up to the 2011 weight limit for the day and we ran a series of fundamental tests within the parameters we could change with the tyres and in the afternoon we found some clear and useful setup directions for the engineers to work on. We set our quickest lap of the day at the end of the session on a pretty worn set and all of the data gives us very useful information that we will carry over to tomorrow when Jarno is back in the car for his first taste of the new Pirelli tyres.”

ABU DHABI TYRE TEST DAY TWO

Abu Dhabi, U.A.E – 20th November 2010

The final day of on-track action of the 2010 season saw Lotus Racing’s Jarno Trulli enjoy his first taste of the new Pirelli tyres at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. As the whole paddock was busy packing up to head home for the winter break Jarno completed a total of 83 laps, recording a quickest time of 1.44.521.

Jarno Trulli (Chassis T127-02): “It’s been a very positive day. It was good to try the Pirelli tyres for the first time and while we have obviously got a lot of work ahead of us I think this was a good start. We will need to focus on the driveability of the tyres – on performance they were good, but we will need to work together in a clear direction to maximise the handling of the car. The hard compounds were pretty consistent, a little less so with the softs, but we have gathered a lot of data that will play an important part in the development of next year’s car. Now the season is over I want to thank the whole team for their work this year – we have finished where we wanted to be and everyone in the team has played their part in helping us reach our goals, so thank you to them and the fans for everything this year.”

Mike Gascoyne, Lotus Racing Chief Technical Officer: “Another successful day for us and a successful conclusion to both the test with Pirelli and the year in general. My thanks to Jarno for his work today – he gave us some excellent feedback which will give us valuable data for the development of the 2011 car. As this is the last run for the T127 I also want to thank the whole team for all their efforts in what has been a fantastic year and thank all our fans for giving us such great support throughout the season. Now we look ahead to 2011 and we are all excited about taking the next step forward with the new package in what is certain to be another very exciting chapter in our story.”

Lotus Racing now head home to take some well earned rest after an incredible season in Formula One™ in which the Anglo-Malaysian squad achieved its primary goal of finishing as best of the new teams. A busy winter beckons preparing for the 2011 season, but for now it is goodbye to the FIA Formula One™ World Championship 2010.

Scuderia Toro Rosso

ABU DHABI TEST – DAY 3

19 November 2010

Circuit: Yas Marina Circuit – 5.554 km

Driver: Jaime Alguersuari

Chassis: STR5 -03

Best time: 1:42.019, 71 laps

This was a significant day for Formula 1, as it was the first ever track test for all teams using tyres supplied by Pirelli, the Italian company which has a contract as the sole tyre supplier for the sport, for the next three seasons.

Each team was supplied with four sets of tyres for today – two Prime, which corresponds to a medium compound tyre on the Pirelli listing and two Option or Soft compound tyres. Jaime Alguersuari was at the wheel of the STR5 and spent the morning evaluating how the car behaved on the new tyres, as well as working on set-up to suit them. In the afternoon, work began on evaluating tyre performance and behaviour over long and short runs.

“It was a useful experience for me to run on these new tyres,” said Jaime Alguersuari. “We did a good mileage, some runs on heavy fuel and some with less and it was interesting to see how the tyres behaved. It is too early to say more than that, because of course there will be more development to come from Pirelli before the next season starts.”

“From the car side, we had a trouble free day,” said Chief Engineer, Laurent Mekies. “Track conditions are now very different to those over the race weekend, partly because of the two days of running during the young driver test. The day went well and we are now preparing for the second day of running with Pirelli, when Sebastien Buemi will take over at the wheel.”

ABU DHABI TEST – DAY 4

20 November 2010

Circuit: Yas Marina Circuit – 5.554 km

Driver: Sebastien Buemi

Chassis: STR5 – 03

Best time: 1:42.145, 98 laps

It fell to Sebastien Buemi to give the STR5 it’s very last outing of 2010, on the final day of testing this year when as yesterday, the focus was on evaluating tyres from the sport’s new supplier, Pirelli.

“This has been a productive day,” commented Chief Engineer Laurent Mekies. “We got through a lot of laps, with a mix of short and long runs and it was especially useful that Sebastien was able to do a very long run, equivalent to a race distance on the soft Pirelli tyre, so there is a lot of data from which we can learn for next season. Apart from the work on the tyre front, we also tried a couple of mechanical components aimed at next year’s car and we ran trouble free throughout the day. That marks the end of testing for 2010, and the team worked well to complete these four additional track days in Abu Dhabi on the back of a very busy end to the season. However, it will not be long until we start all over again at Valencia in early February.”

“I am pleased with my first test day on the Pirelli tyres,” said Sebastien Buemi. “We got through a lot of work, although it is difficult to draw any conclusions regarding actual performance, even if the feeling from the tyres is pretty good at this early stage. Now, our engineers will have a lot of work back at the factory to ensure the new car suits the characteristics of the tyres. Overall, I do not think we could have done a better job at this test, so it is nice to see the 2010 season end on a positive note.”

Force India F1

Force India F1 Team concludes first test on Pirelli tyres

20 November 2010 – The Force India F1 Team rounded off its 2010 racing year – its most successful season in F1 to date – by welcoming a new partner to the fold. For the first time the team got experience of running with Pirelli tyres, which will be supplied to all teams in the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2011 onwards.

One day after the conclusion of the young driver test, Force India was back at the Yas Marina Circuit for the two day test, with Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta sharing driving duties on day one and Paul and Tonio Liuzzi participating in day two.

The trio completed tests designed to gather as much information as possible on weight distribution, aero settings and general balance to feed back into the development programme of the 2011 challenger, the VJM04, which continues apace back at the team’s HQ in Silverstone, UK. The team also ran extensive tests with the two types of compounds available at this test, the soft and medium tyre.

Dominic Harlow, chief race engineer

We have been looking forward to this Pirelli tyre test since we received the first real information about the tyres from them in early September. Over these two days we’ve covered more than two race distances and have been impressed with Pirelli’s tyres.

We’ve allowed all three of our drivers to make an overall assessment in comparison to this year’s baseline, and then we’ve carried out further parameterised testing with the two compounds available. In addition we have run with a great many additional sensors and data acquisition systems to collect as much information as possible from the tyres on track. Having used eight sets, four option and four prime, we feel we’ve built a reasonable early picture of the tyres at a circuit which, although changing in condition, has proven productive for testing.

The next steps are for us to incorporate what we have learned into the development of VJM04, and for Pirelli’s engineers to analyse the data they have collected as they determine the tyre specifications that will be available to us when we are next testing in February 2011.
