{"id":10276,"date":"2011-01-01T09:24:17","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T14:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=10276"},"modified":"2011-01-01T09:24:17","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T14:24:17","slug":"son-of-ex-f1-driver-admits-us-gp-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/son-of-ex-f1-driver-admits-us-gp-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"Son of ex-F1 driver admits US GP &#8216;boost&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2012 US grand prix could be good news for the son of an Irish former formula one driver.<\/p>\n<p>57-year-old Derek Daly drove in the late 70s and early 80s for the likes of Tyrrell and Williams, later becoming a US citizen after switching to the CART series and settling in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>Also famous as a motor racing commentator for American television, Daly has a US-born 19-year-old son Conor Daly who has risen through the ranks and has recently been racing in the Star Mazda open-wheeler series.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The biggest boost to his career could be Austin, Texas,&#8221; Daly told the Austin American Statesman, referring to the scheduled US grand prix of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The pair were in Austin for talks with potential sponsors, with a seat in the F1 feeder series GP3 reportedly on the table.<\/p>\n<p>They also met with Tavo Hellmund, the promoter of the US GP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Austin will be the mecca of motor sports for North and South America. You&#8217;ve got the perfect platform,&#8221; added Derek Daly.<\/p>\n<p>Conor was linked with the ill-fated USF1 project last year and admits he is still targeting F1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the top level of racing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why we need an American to represent our country on the top step of the podium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;American drivers do not have much credibility in Europe,&#8221; added Daly Jr, &#8220;but to get to F1, you have to be in Europe. It&#8217;s a big change for me.
