{"id":11612,"date":"2011-03-23T07:03:13","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T11:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=11612"},"modified":"2011-03-23T07:03:13","modified_gmt":"2011-03-23T11:03:13","slug":"staten-island-plays-down-f1-race-rumours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/staten-island-plays-down-f1-race-rumours\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island plays down F1 race rumours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Officials in the New York borough Staten Island have played down claims the location could be the scene of a formula one race.<\/p>\n<p>It emerged this week that Bernie Ecclestone called off his scheduled visit to Melbourne for the 2011 season opener in order to meet in New York with mayor Michael Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve heard nothing about the proposal,&#8221; a spokesman for Staten Island councilman Vincent Ignizio told the Austin American-Statesman.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of staff Joe Borelli added: &#8220;Our road transportation is lacking.\u00a0 We have choking points.\u00a0 There are four ways to get in and out of Staten Island and the bridges are not that big.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Seven years ago, NASCAR track management International Speedway Corporation bought land on Staten Island but it is now trying to sell it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did oppose NASCAR.\u00a0 The majority of people were against it,&#8221; confirmed Borelli.<\/p>\n<p>He said the reason for opposing motor racing is that Staten Island, as one of the five boroughs of New York City, would not collect the money generated by the races.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It might be different if we were a city,&#8221; said Borelli.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for another island councilman James Oddo added: &#8220;In this economic climate I can only see them (race promoters) having more issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials in the New York borough Staten Island have played down claims the location could be the scene of a formula one race.
