{"id":13143,"date":"2011-07-18T07:14:28","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T11:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=13143"},"modified":"2011-07-18T07:14:28","modified_gmt":"2011-07-18T11:14:28","slug":"exhaust-saga-was-political-not-technical-illien","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/exhaust-saga-was-political-not-technical-illien\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhaust saga was &#8216;political&#8217; not technical &#8211; Illien"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The blown exhaust saga has been a political rather than a technical argument.<\/p>\n<p>That is the view of Mario Illien, the former designer of Mercedes&#8217; formula one engines who now as an outsider admitted to watching the Silverstone saga unfold.<\/p>\n<p>During the British grand prix weekend, teams argued about the FIA&#8217;s clampdown on the grounds that limiting off-throttle blowing too much risked damaging the engines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not an issue.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an argument, but it really is not an issue,&#8221; Illien is quoted by ennstal-classic.at.\u00a0 &#8220;These were political statements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also played down continuing fears that, with F1 now having scrapped its plans for four-cylinder engines, the V6 turbos of 2014 will also not sound as good as the current V8s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s an issue,&#8221; said Illien.\u00a0 &#8220;The noise of a V6 turbo is fine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also refused to rule out following the footsteps of Craig Pollock&#8217;s PURE in designing a V6 engine for F1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t say yet.\u00a0 If a manufacturer wants an engine from us, then I would definitely be interested in a long-term project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The blown exhaust saga has been a political rather than a technical argument.
