{"id":15680,"date":"2012-03-29T07:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-03-29T11:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=15680"},"modified":"2012-03-29T07:00:59","modified_gmt":"2012-03-29T11:00:59","slug":"ecclestone-team-bosses-say-bahrain-going-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/ecclestone-team-bosses-say-bahrain-going-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecclestone, team bosses, say Bahrain going ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>F1 team bosses turned out in force as officials insisted next month&#8217;s Bahrain grand prix is definitely on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2012-rif-images\/f1-12-people\/Bernie-Ecclestone-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bernie-Ecclestone-1\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/>The sport&#8217;s chief executive Bernie Ecclestone joined Sir Frank Williams, Martin Whitmarsh, Christian Horner, Mercedes&#8217; Nick Fry and Pirelli&#8217;s Paul Hembery at a media lunch in London.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Talk about heavy support,&#8221; wrote Reuters correspondent Alan Baldwin on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The self-described &#8216;PR offensive&#8217; to promote the forthcoming Bahrain grand prix followed reports earlier this week that said the FIA had decided to cancel the race due to ongoing unrest in the island Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all nonsense.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll be there as long as they want us,&#8221; said Ecclestone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seriously, the press should just be quiet and deal with the facts rather than make up stories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If it was up to the drivers, though, they might give it a miss.\u00a0 Timo Glock is a brave lone voice: &#8220;Why should we expose ourselves to unnecessary risk?&#8221; he asked rhetorically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it was up to me, we wouldn&#8217;t go there,&#8221; he told Germany&#8217;s Auto Motor und Sport.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain circuit boss Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al-Khalifa, however, dismissed the risk of violence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These incidents can happen anywhere,&#8221; he told AP news agency.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s not going to stop our grand prix.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ecclestone added: &#8220;I don&#8217;t need any personal security, but whatever&#8217;s necessary will be looked after.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to a poll in popular British magazine F1 Racing, 60,000 of the 100,000 F1 fans polled internationally said it is &#8220;not right&#8221; for the race to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward to the event, however, is the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>Nabeel Rajab, the president, is quoted by the Telegraph: &#8220;(F1) is helping dictators and we are going to protest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to use the opportunities that a lot of journalists are there and we are going to protest everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F1 team bosses turned out in force as officials insisted next month&#8217;s Bahrain grand prix is definitely on.
