{"id":15947,"date":"2012-05-07T07:13:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T11:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=15947"},"modified":"2012-05-07T07:13:37","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T11:13:37","slug":"bahrain-could-get-director-on-f1-board-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/bahrain-could-get-director-on-f1-board-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Bahrain could get director on F1 board &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bahrain, the controversial island Kingdom, could have been central to McLaren&#8217;s decision to agree the terms of the next Concorde Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain&#8217;s ruling family, through its investment arm Mumtalakat Holdings, owns half of the famous British team.<\/p>\n<p>The Times&#8217; F1 correspondent Kevin Eason quoted a source as saying the link &#8220;pushed (McLaren&#8217;s) Concorde deal over the line&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In return for signing up, Bahrain reportedly received a &#8220;pledge&#8221; that last month&#8217;s highly contentious grand prix would go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Eason also said it is possible that one of McLaren&#8217;s two Bahraini directors, rather than the obvious choice Ron Dennis, could be appointed to the F1 board once the sport is floated on the Singapore exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Bernie Ecclestone denied the 2012 Bahrain grand prix and the Concorde Agreement deal were linked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was nothing to do with the Bahrain race (going ahead),&#8221; the F1 chief executive insisted.\u00a0 &#8220;But McLaren liked the deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Intriguingly, however, F1&#8217;s post-stock market floatation chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has defended the controversial decision to push ahead with Bahrain last month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The race was exploited by the opposition in Bahrain, not vice versa,&#8221; he told the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung.\u00a0 &#8220;That was not interpreted correctly by the media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If groups want to exploit sporting events for their interests, then the worst thing you can do is give way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brabeck also compared Bahrain to England.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In what countries are there no riots?&#8221; he asked rhetorically.\u00a0 &#8220;A year ago there were riots in London &#8212; should the Olympic Games now be cancelled?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bahrain, the controversial island Kingdom, could have been central to McLaren&#8217;s decision to agree the terms of the next Concorde Agreement.
