{"id":16262,"date":"2012-07-02T07:41:11","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T11:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=16262"},"modified":"2012-07-02T07:32:43","modified_gmt":"2012-07-02T11:32:43","slug":"serious-differences-in-tyre-quality-in-2012-marko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/serious-differences-in-tyre-quality-in-2012-marko\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Serious differences&#8217; in tyre quality in 2012 &#8211; Marko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Helmut Marko suspects there are &#8220;serious differences&#8221; in the quality of the sets of tyres being supplied this year by Pirelli.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2012\/championship-f1-2012\/R12Mon-F1\/R12Mon-F1-04.jpg\" alt=\"R12Mon-F1-04\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/>Red Bull&#8217;s motor racing consultant also said the sole tyre supplier&#8217;s 2012 product works only within a ludicrously small performance &#8216;window&#8217;, and favours cars with simple designs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the German language motorline.cc, Marko said Italian marque Pirelli &#8220;received an order to make formula one more exciting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, for Pirelli&#8217;s first season on the grid, the tyres spiced up the show due to their heavily-degrading nature.<\/p>\n<p>And this year, experts have explained that the tyres are &#8216;mysterious&#8217; in terms of how the engineers and drivers can make them work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Normally a tyre degrades steadily, but with the current Pirelli compounds they are working one lap and the next they&#8217;re gone,&#8221; said the outspoken Austrian.<\/p>\n<p>And Marko said the Pirellis are also difficult to get working in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it was in Malaysia with Mark Webber, we were on the hard compound and we put in two clicks more of front wing &#8212; a marginal different but &#8216;Bang!&#8217; we were 1.2 seconds faster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thought &#8216;Boom!\u00a0 Our car is now great&#8217; but we put on the soft compound and were eight tenths slower,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Marko said he suspects there are &#8220;serious differences&#8221; in the quality of the sets of tyres being supplied by Pirelli this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The result is that cars that are simple in design are easier to get to the windows in which the tyres work best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At Valencia recently, however, Red Bull&#8217;s latest developments appeared to be a breakthrough for the RB8, as Sebastian Vettel dominated qualifying and the race until his technical breakdown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It hurts (rivals) terribly when you&#8217;re so superior,&#8221; explained Marko.\u00a0 &#8220;In the race we had to tell Vettel &#8216;Go slower!\u00a0 Even slower!\u00a0 And now even slower!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know too well &#8212; if you are too far ahead you definitely lose more friends than you make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Helmut Marko suspects there are &#8220;serious differences&#8221; in the quality of the sets of tyres being supplied this year by Pirelli.
