{"id":17603,"date":"2013-01-18T07:04:28","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T12:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=17603"},"modified":"2013-01-18T07:04:28","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T12:04:28","slug":"last-minute-ban-spoiled-red-bulls-2012-start-newey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/last-minute-ban-spoiled-red-bulls-2012-start-newey\/","title":{"rendered":"Last-minute ban spoiled Red Bull&#8217;s 2012 start &#8211; Newey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adrian Newey has confirmed reports an eleventh-hour ban by the FIA was a serious setback to Red Bull&#8217;s 2012 preparations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" alt=\"Adrian-Newey\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2012-rif-images\/f1-12-people\/Adrian-Newey.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"262\" \/>It emerged in recent days that, just as the reigning champions were preparing to test debut the ultimately title-winning RB8, F1&#8217;s governing body banned Newey&#8217;s solution to the new blown exhaust clampdown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It set us back further than we thought,&#8221; Briton Newey told Germany&#8217;s Auto Motor und Sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we looked at the new rules, we thought the effects would be less severe, especially because we thought we could compensate well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, the FIA said Red Bull could not use its proposed 2012 exhaust solution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So because of the lack of time we went to the first test with a conventional exhaust in the engine cowling,&#8221; said Newey.\u00a0 Frantic work behind the scenes then began on a so-called &#8216;Coanda&#8217; solution.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that the banned 2012 solution was a sophisticated sort of rear brake duct that absorbed exhaust gases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a loophole in the rules for the area behind the rear suspension,&#8221; said designer Newey.\u00a0 &#8220;So you could have something that collects the gases and transports them where you want them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The FIA quickly closed the loophole, leaving Red Bull scrambling for balance at the start of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was hard to find a balance, yes,&#8221; Newey confirmed.\u00a0 &#8220;We had understeer, oversteer, often booth simultaneously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He says often that the FIA&#8217;s constant crusade against innovation is frustrating.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We should be careful that the rules don&#8217;t restrict the inventive spirit.\u00a0 The beauty of formula one is the struggle of man against man but also machine against machine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is something for every interest.\u00a0 The more stringent the rules are, the faster we move towards &#8216;GP1&#8217;.\u00a0 Do we want that?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m surprised how many of my colleagues at the meetings of the technical working group make the case for more restrictions.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as if we are letting the turkeys vote for Christmas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adrian Newey has confirmed reports an eleventh-hour ban by the FIA was a serious setback to Red Bull&#8217;s 2012 preparations.
