{"id":19069,"date":"2013-08-24T07:51:19","date_gmt":"2013-08-24T11:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=19069"},"modified":"2013-08-24T07:51:19","modified_gmt":"2013-08-24T11:51:19","slug":"drivers-could-boycott-over-spa-tyre-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/drivers-could-boycott-over-spa-tyre-danger\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers could boycott over Spa tyre danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>F1 drivers are threatening to &#8216;boycott&#8217; the Belgian grand prix if their concerns about tyre safety are not eased, according to Italy&#8217;s La Gazzetta dello Sport.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" alt=\"Paul-Hembery-3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2013-rif-images\/f1-2013-persons\/Paul-Hembery-3.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/>The new saga has arisen after Sebastian Vettel suffered a rear failure during practice at high-speed Spa-Francorchamps on Friday, reviving fears of a repeat of June&#8217;s tyre-exploding British grand prix.<\/p>\n<p>It later emerged that a similar failure had occurred at the rear and on the same side on Fernando Alonso&#8217;s Ferrari, while Speed Week said yet more drivers had also reported problems.<\/p>\n<p>Pirelli&#8217;s Paul Hembery reacted by insisting the problem is &#8220;very different&#8221; to what was seen at Silverstone, according to SID news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not talking about a Silverstone scenario,&#8221; he is quoted by Speed Week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From initial analysis it appears that both (Vettel and Alonso&#8217;s failures) were caused by an outside factor, probably debris on the track,&#8221; the Briton was quoted in an official statement.<\/p>\n<p>F1 veteran Mark Webber, however, does not believe it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need answers and debris is not the answer,&#8221; he is quoted by the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p>Reports, including in the Guardian newspaper, said the drivers have asked F1 race director Charlie Whiting to &#8220;seek a guarantee&#8221; from Pirelli about the safety of the tyres.<\/p>\n<p>That would require the Italian company to give definite answers about precisely what debris cut the tyres on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a worry for the sport,&#8221; Hembery said, &#8220;because we have to go out and find what it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The implication is that Pirelli might not be able to come up with a definite answer, risking the prospect of drivers going through with their threat.<\/p>\n<p>So Hembery showed journalists photographs of the damaged tyres, arguing that all the evidence points to debris having caused the cuts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s not a lot we can do about that,&#8221; he is quoted by The National.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have seen a lot of signs on other tyres, small surface cuts, so there is clearly something.\u00a0 I cannot tell you what it is, but it is from external sources,&#8221; added Hembery.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F1 drivers are threatening to &#8216;boycott&#8217; the Belgian grand prix if their concerns about tyre safety are not eased, according to Italy&#8217;s La Gazzetta dello Sport.
