{"id":20596,"date":"2013-12-30T07:39:54","date_gmt":"2013-12-30T12:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=20596"},"modified":"2013-12-30T07:39:54","modified_gmt":"2013-12-30T12:39:54","slug":"schumacher-fighting-for-life-after-skiing-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/schumacher-fighting-for-life-after-skiing-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Schumacher fighting for life after skiing fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Schumacher is fighting for his life in a hospital in France.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignright\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" alt=\"Michael-Schumacher-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2012-rif-images\/f1-12-drivers\/Michael-Schumacher-1.jpg\" width=\"384\" height=\"256\" \/>The seven time world champion, who retired from F1 for the second time last year, sustained a head injury while skiing off-piste at the Meribel ski resort on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Early reports suggested the 44-year-old former Ferrari and Mercedes driver&#8217;s injuries were not serious, despite him striking a rock with his helmeted head.<\/p>\n<p>But the university hospital in Grenoble said in a statement: &#8220;He suffered a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention.\u00a0 He remains in a critical situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Schumacher&#8217;s manager Sabine Kehm confirmed the hospital&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His state of health has worsened and his condition is considered life-threatening, according to our information,&#8221; the respected local newspaper Dauphine Libere reported.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital has scheduled a press conference for Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Citing hospital sources, French-language media claim Schumacher suffered a brain haemorrhage despite initially regaining consciousness after the fall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that they undertook something almost immediately, that he was admitted to the surgical unit, suggests that something very serious has happened,&#8221; Chris Chandler, a London neurosurgeon, is quoted by the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Gerard Saillant, a close friend of Schumacher&#8217;s who treated his broken leg in 1999, rushed from Paris to assist with the treatment.<\/p>\n<p>It is reported that Schumacher, who was skiing with his 14-year-old son Mick, is now surrounded by his family, while close friends Ross Brawn and Jean Todt are also at the hospital in Grenoble.<\/p>\n<p>Former F1 driver Olivier Panis, a local, was reportedly turned away when he tried to visit Schumacher.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes and well-wishes for Schumacher, a global sporting legend, have poured in, and his personal website has crashed under the demand for information.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A security cordon has been placed around certain areas,&#8221; a hospital spokesman was quoted by the Daily Mail.\u00a0 &#8220;Extra officers have been drafted in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Schumacher is fighting for his life in a hospital in France.
