{"id":22230,"date":"2014-06-09T06:45:09","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T10:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=22230"},"modified":"2014-06-09T06:45:09","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T10:45:09","slug":"rosberg-a-big-winner-amid-mercedes-troubles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/rosberg-a-big-winner-amid-mercedes-troubles\/","title":{"rendered":"Rosberg a &#8216;big winner&#8217; amid Mercedes troubles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nico Rosberg was all smiles after the Canadian grand prix, despite failing to win and grappling with technical problems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/gallery\/f1-2014-rif-images\/f1-2014-drivers\/Nico-Rosberg-3.jpg\" alt=\"Nico-Rosberg-3\" width=\"430\" height=\"286\" \/>&#8220;(Daniel) Ricciardo wins,&#8221; announced the headline at the German newspaper Die Welt, &#8220;but the big winner is Rosberg&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>After six straight wins so far in 2014, ultra-dominant Mercedes struck trouble in Canada, with the energy recovery systems on both cars playing up.<\/p>\n<p>On Rosberg&#8217;s W05, he simply lost the 160 horse power of energy recovery boost, but still managed to finish second behind Red Bull&#8217;s first win of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This shows how good the Mercedes engine is,&#8221; Renault-powered Red Bull&#8217;s designer Adrian Newey is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport.<\/p>\n<p>The even better news for German Rosberg is that similar problems aboard Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s sister car meant the Briton had to retire.<\/p>\n<p>It means Rosberg&#8217;s championship lead, only controversially re-captured in Monaco two weeks ago, now extends to a considerable 22 points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every point matters,&#8221; said the disappointed Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s two DNFs for me and none for Nico, but we are learning as a team and I am sure we won&#8217;t have any more incidents like we did today,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes&#8217; problems meant that Australian Ricciardo made his already-impressive first season for Red Bull even better, with world champion Sebastian Vettel third.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s nice that we could capitalise on Mercedes&#8217; issues,&#8221; said new grand prix winner Ricciardo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it would have been disappointing if they had their issues and they were able to still get the best of us,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Ricciardo&#8217;s debut win would also seem to have concreted his place at Red Bull beyond 2014.\u00a0 &#8220;I can&#8217;t see any change happening soon!&#8221; he grinned on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s Dr Helmut Marko agreed: &#8220;We are very proud of him.\u00a0 What he is showing now proves that our decision to put him there was absolutely right,&#8221; he told German television Sky.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of the Canadian grand prix also isolated Ferrari as the only engine manufacturer involved in formula one yet to break through in the new V6 era.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Red Bull winning is a surprise,&#8221; Fernando Alonso told Spanish reporters after the race, having finished just sixth, four places ahead of his struggling teammate Kimi Raikkonen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What it shows is that it is important to keep working hard, because anything can happen in formula one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we had said after winter testing that Red Bull would win this race, you would not believe it.\u00a0 They have improved a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for his personal goals for the next few races in 2014, Alonso sounded downbeat: &#8220;Finish ahead of my teammate and go home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a9 RIF | GMM<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nico Rosberg was all smiles after the Canadian grand prix, despite failing to win and grappling with technical problems. &#8220;(Daniel) Ricciardo wins,&#8221; announced the headline at the German newspaper Die Welt, &#8220;but the big winner is Rosberg&#8221;.
