{"id":3785,"date":"2010-03-26T11:52:52","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T15:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/?p=3785"},"modified":"2010-03-26T11:44:42","modified_gmt":"2010-03-26T15:44:42","slug":"peter-sauber-says-f-duct-not-copied-from-mclaren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/formula-1\/peter-sauber-says-f-duct-not-copied-from-mclaren\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Sauber says F-duct not copied from McLaren"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adrian Newey has expressed surprise at how quickly Sauber was able to implement an &#8216;F-duct&#8217; solution without breaking F1&#8217;s chassis homologation rules.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just two weeks after the air duct system was cleared to race on McLaren&#8217;s 2010 car in Bahrain, a similar version was tested aboard Sauber&#8217;s C29 car on Friday morning in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>As it happened, the Swiss team had a troublesome day with unrelated wing and technical problems, and so the system &#8211; activated by the Sauber drivers&#8217; hand and knee &#8211; will not reappear on the car until practice in Malaysia in a week.<\/p>\n<p>But with Sauber now one of the smallest and least-sponsored teams in pitlane, Red Bull&#8217;s designer Newey is amazed the system has been implemented in mere days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The (homologation) regulations do not allow you to drill holes in the chassis,&#8221; the Briton is quoted as saying by Germany&#8217;s Auto Motor und Sport.<\/p>\n<p>Replied Sauber&#8217;s technical boss Willy Rampf: &#8220;We simply used one of the wiring holes, which are big enough to accommodate an air hose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And unlike McLaren&#8217;s monocoque-mounted system, the Sauber inlet is fixed to the left sidepod, which is not a part of the chassis.<\/p>\n<p>Although Rampf said Friday&#8217;s test was inconclusive, it is understood that Sauber engineers were satisfied that straightline speed will be increased with its system.<\/p>\n<p>Auto Motor und Sport said the innovation is not a new idea at Sauber, but that its designers back at Hinwil believed it would not be legal for the driver to manually control the airflow.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the stewards&#8217; ruling in Bahrain, which signalled the green-light for the Melbourne-spec version.<\/p>\n<p>Said team boss Peter Sauber: &#8220;We have not copied McLaren.\u00a0 Within such a short time that would have been impossible.\u00a0 This is our own system, and if it is similar in principle to McLaren&#8217;s, it can only mean that we had the same idea at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It should also be noted that new Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa was McLaren&#8217;s test driver until and including 2009, when the British team says the innovation was already in development.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">\u00a9 RIF|GMM<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adrian Newey has expressed surprise at how quickly Sauber was able to implement an &#8216;F-duct&#8217; solution without breaking F1&#8217;s chassis homologation rules. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0},"categories":[3],"tags":[396,5262,5261,5284,271,243,114,319],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3785"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3785"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3785\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3786,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3785\/revisions\/3786"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3785"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3785"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.racinginfocus.com\/rif\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3785"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
