\u00a0<\/p>\nFlying Lizard hopes to regain points lead in tight GT race<\/p>\n
In any competitive field, dominance can come from two avenues: consistency and skill. J\u00f6rg Bergmeister has displayed plenty of both at Lime Rock Park during the last four years. It\u2019s why he enters this weekend\u2019s American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix looking for a fifth consecutive class victory in the event. He will do so with Flying Lizard Motorsports teammate Patrick Long in one of the team\u2019s two Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Bergmeister is searching for the small areas where he and Long can improve over their Northeast Grand Prix performance last year. The pairing won in GT2 by a lap and placed fifth overall; Bergmeister also set the fastest lap of the race.<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess a lot of luck was a big part of it,\u201d said Bergmeister, musing about his incredible successes, \u201cbut it takes (practice and teamwork) as well to win at a busy track like Lime Rock. Traffic will be a big factor in the race, so it needs a lot of patience to survive, and if you have done that, you should be in a good position at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n
But as the GT points race heats up, Flying Lizard could use Bergmeister\u2019s realistic perspective. Flying Lizard has now fallen to third in the standings after leading the class entering the last race in Salt Lake City. Team rivals BMW Rahal Letterman Racing and Risi Competizione now sit first and second in the points, respectively, forcing Flying Lizard to look toward this weekend as a chance for redemption.<\/p>\n
Bergmeister and the Lizards do have history on their side. Porsche hasn\u2019t lost at Lime Rock since 2004.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not going to Lime Rock for a win but for as many points as we can get,\u201d the four-time Series champion said. \u201cThe goal is to win the championship every year, and it would be more than nice to do it again as the competition gets stronger by the year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bergmeister, Flying Lizard Motorsports and the rest of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr\u00f3n will return to action at the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix. The two-hour, 45-minute race is set for 2:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 24 from Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. SPEED will air the race live at 2 p.m. ET.
