First Overall Pole Position for Guy Smith

Popular Brit outpaces Brabham for Friday Qualifying at Mazda Raceway

Guy Smith gave Mazda power its first overall pole position on its home track Friday. Dyson Racing’s popular Brit set a fast lap of 1:12.338 (111.377 mph) in qualifying for the American Le Mans Series Monterey presented by Tequila Patrón. Smith outpaced Patrón Highcroft Racing’s David Brabham by 0.671 seconds for his first career pole position in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.

It also is the first pole position for isobutanol, which is powering the Lola-Mazda coupe that Smith will drive in Saturday’s six-hour race with Chris Dyson and Andy Meyrick. Smith was quickest in Friday’s two practice sessions as the Dyson squad captured its first overall pole position since Butch Leitzinger’s FQ at Portland in 2006.

Three manufacturers filled the top three spots in LMP qualifying. After Brabham – who will drive PHR’s HPD ARX-01c with Simon Pagenaud and Marino Franchitti – was Muscle Milk Team CytoSport’s Klaus Graf at 1:13.855 (109.089 mph). He will drive his Porsche RS Spyder with Memo Gidley and Sascha Maassen.
