Another look: St. Petersburg 2009

Acura, Porsche ruled on streets of St. Pete in second round

After a stellar opening to the 2009 season, the American Le Mans Series headed slightly west from Sebring for the Acura Sports Car Challenge of St. Petersburg. The weekend marked another historic first for Acura and Patrón Highcroft Racing as Duncan Dayton’s pairing of David Brabham and Scott Sharp won the first LMP1 race for the manufacturer and the first for the Acura ARX-02a.

Acura’s P2 offering proved just as capable with an overall runner-up finish for Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz in Lowe’s Fernandez Racing’s Acura ARX-01b. Flying Lizard Motorsports’ duo of Porsche drivers Jörg Bergmeister and Patrick Long won the first of five straight rounds, a stretch that carried them to the GT2 championship.

Check back next Wednesday for a review of the season’s third round: the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach.

The American Le Mans Series will open its 12th season with America’s greatest sports car race, the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida from March 17-20.
