Camirand Victorious in Race One at the GP3R in Trois Rivières

Breaks track record for driver victories.

(Trois Rivières –  August 14 2010) St. Leonard d’Aston native Marc-Antoine Camirand celebrated his record setting ninth career win at the Grand Prix de Trois Rivières. Camirand powered his way to a heat race win this afternoon in the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship.

Starting from the pole position, the Camirand Competition BMW driver took command of the race early and led all 23 laps. By the time the chequered flag fell, Camirand was 8.247 seconds ahead of the second-place G1 Racing Hyundai Genesis of Sasha Anis.

The M&S Racing Acura CSX of Gary Kwok moved up eight positions to finish third in Super Touring. G1 Racing’s Bob Attrell pulled out all the stops as he piloted his Hyundai Genesis up 11 spots to finish fourth with Lombardi Racing’s Benjamin Distaulo rounding out the top five.

The fastest lap of the race (1:13.614) was turned in by Camirand, whose BMW M-Coupe looked unstoppable. “The car was working flawlessly the whole race but closer to the end I started hearing noises here and there from all over the car that started to worry me, but I was sure we had a great car to make it to the end,” Camirand said after his victory.

In the Touring class, Anthony Rapone led the entire race in his Honda Civic Si followed closely by his teammates, Karl Thomson (second) and guest driver Greg Liefooghe for a Compass/360 Racing podium.

“I had a great start and found my stride early in the race even though I had to work on bedding in the brakes while I raced,” explained Rapone. “I wanted to get a comfortable enough lead to allow my team mates work their way into position to put our team on the podium,”  he said.

Thomson and Liefooghe had their work cut out for them early in the race but once they settled into a rhythm it was smooth sailing all the way to the checkered flag.

The action continues on Sunday, with a 30-minute feature race scheduled to run from 9:50 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.
