BEHIND THE SCENES AT SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT

30 March 2010,  Sepang International Circuits

With only two days away from the 2010 Formula One PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix, the paddock area of the Sepang International Circuit was a hive of activities today as the Formula One team crews begin setting up their equipment in preparation for the race this weekend.

The teams arrived yesterday evening from Melbourne, and begin setting up the pit garage within hours after their arrival.

Dressed in their respective team t-shirts, the crew worked hard shifting their equipment from the containers via forklifts and sheer muscle power, their skins turning red as the sun blazed down on them.

By 9am this morning, the teams from Mercedes GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Sauber, Williams, Virgin, Toro Rosso, Lotus, Force India, Red Bull and HRT were hard at work setting up their respective garages.

“Our equipment arrived at 8.30 this morning, and we began setting up the garage and the office immediately. There’s a lot of things that needs to be done, and by this evening everything should be ready,” said Mercedes team coordinator Martin Pople.

His 65 team members arrived in from Melbourne last night, and by 8.30 this morning were hard at work, shifting and assembling the equipment required for the race.

“We need to make sure that everything is working well and in place before we start assembling the car tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lotus Racing brand manager, Anand Krishnan said the team had assembled one of the two Lotus cars to be transported to Pavilion for a function, held to welcome the arrival of Malaysia’s Lotus F1 Racing team back on the home ground.

“The car has to be transported to Pavilion via an open-top flat bed and it has to reach the site by 3pm today in time for the function today, “ he said, as police outriders waited on the site to accompany the car as it is transported from SIC to the mall.

Inside the Sepang international Circuit paddock area, the SIC staff and crew are also busy preparing the circuit for the hectic race weekend.

Several members of the international and national media were also present at the circuit to witness the preparation for the 2010 Formula One PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix.

Reporters and photographers from the national media and even BBC Sports were also seen weaving their way between the crews, snatching in interviews with the pit crew and SIC team members and taking photographs of the activities around the paddock.

And the clock keeps ticking away..
