Mercedes not confirming Heidfeld reports

Norbert Haug on Tuesday declined to confirm reports that Nick Heidfeld has been offered the test and reserve role at Mercedes GP for 2010.

“There has only been basic contact with Nick, which is what I have had for several years,” the German marque’s competition director told the German news agency DPA. “We did talk to Nick about possibilities with Mercedes GP as well as McLaren-Mercedes,” Haug added.

Heidfeld, 32, wrote on the blog on his official website that Michael Schumacher’s decision to return to F1 with Mercedes this season had “affected me directly”. “It’s relevant because there is less space (on the grid),” the veteran of 169 grands prix added. “But I don’t think I’m naive when I say that, especially after the past few weeks, the unexpected can happen. “We are now looking forward and are focused on the best long-term option for my future.  I hope that in the coming weeks I can announce something concrete about my plans,” said Heidfeld.
